More Vet Tails

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Image VetKokoa

Greg, the Subiaco Vet, has two grey cats called Calvin and Bambi Rose. They sit calmly in the waiting area or just wander around quietly mixing with dogs, mice and guinea pigs.

Of course I take every opportunity to make new friends so say I hello to other dogs who are waiting. These are photos of some dogs who were ill or just waiting for a checkups. There are some who sadly will fall asleep with Greg and their mum or dad cuddling them because they are very sick but and they will wake up again in Doggie heaven sprightly and healthy. Most of the dogs I meet leave the Vet dog happy!

These patient dogies were waiting at Wembley Vet for help.

My Car Collision Tail

Accidents are things that happen UNEXPECTEDLY. Usually when we are rushing or doing too many things carelessly. This is a tale of two accidents I had in one day.

When I was a very little puppy a stick I was playing with scratched my mouth. Mum rushed me down to see Greg the vet. He checked out a little cut in my mouth and said I was Ok to go back to the park to play.

As we went back to Mum’s car I started wriggling and squirming and loosened myself from mum’s arms. I dropped to the ground and sped along the skinny green verge outside his clinic. I had a choice of turning right or left but sadly turned right onto busy Railway Road. A big fast car hit me and bounced me onto the verge. Greg and his staff rushed out from the clinic and saved me. Later, when I was recovering from my bruises and headache, he told me to be more careful near roads as many doggies who ran onto the road were squashed. I was  very lucky to survive.

My friend Cato also ran across Roberts Road near Mueller Park. A car squashed his feet. He has been a very brave dog and done his exercises so that he can still run around. He is a lucky dog too. You can see he is wearing his little special shoes.

Iga also had an accident and hurt his foot but he is all better now. My neighbour Millie ran into a car and broke her shoulder. She had to have some surgery but you can see her running happily around Richard Diggins Park again.

Doggie Disasters – Trips to the Vet

Surprisingly for a little dog, I have had more than my fair share of disasters. Here are a few little tales with scary endings. Of course, because I am still writing this tale, you know I survived each of them!

The Satay Stick Saga

One night, as mum and I were walking down Axon St, my mischievous nose detected a smelly stick, with a tasty peanut covering, under a bush. My whiskers quivered and I wasted no time in bolting it down. When mum looked back at me from her stargazing, I was smiling lots. She knew I was up to something but could not guess what.

The next morning, when mum woke up, I was crying softly. There was a sharp pain inside me. Mum knew I had done something naughty but she did not know what. So, of course we went to see my friend Greg the Vet again. After Mum told Greg the story Greg gave me a little needle and I fell asleep in mum’s arms.

When I woke up again, the pain was gone and I was hungry. I was very happy! Greg showed mum a little jar with a long Satay stick in it. He said, “You are a very very lucky dog KoKo. Next time you find some leftovers please eat the meat but please leave the stick“.

 A Fishy Fiasco

BlowFish_6175

I have mentioned I like many sorts of meat but I also like fish. Once I found a fish just lying in the sand by the river (in that other suburb that Subiaco people do not want to amalgamate with). It smelt beautifully stinky (the Blow Fish not Nedlands). I sank my sharp teeth into the dead fish and started to grind the bones. You should have seen my mum! She grabbed the Blow Fish tail and tried to stop it slipping down my throat! But I was not giving it back. We fought hard but I gulped it down. Next thing I knew mum was driving like a maniac (safely) to see Greg again.

It was very EMBARRASSING. Greg gave me an injection that made me throw up! And he made me eat charcoal! There I was sitting on newspaper with black stuff all over my face feeling very bloated and uncomfortable. Mum cried. Not about the money it cost her, but about nearly losing me. I don’t like Blow Fish anymore.

The Chair Chase Calamity

I am usually tied to a pole while Mum buys our coffees. One rainy day at Spring Cafe Mum tied me to a chair under shelter. A big noisy truck frightened me as it went past. My eyes flew open and I tensed up all over. I ran away from the noise as fast as my little legs could carry me.

Bang, crash, bang, scrape I heard. The noise behind me was still there and it was getting closer and louder. My ears were flat against my head my tail tucked under with fear. I glanced behind and saw the chair was chasing me. Faster and faster I ran down Bagot Road but I could not escape. BANG, CRASH, BANG, SCRAPE – the chair was shouting in my sensitive little ears.

Finally mum caught up to us, killed the chair, and saved me. I shook lots and lots and was very upset. I would not even smile at the kids or eat a treat. Mum cuddled me and tried to calm me but I was very traumatised Eventually my terrors eased a little and I slept.

KokoScared

My memory was too good. I could not forget the sound and the fear I felt. I refused to go near a cafe. Mum tried to trick me by going a different way to the cafe but she could not fool me. As we neared the cafe I would always shake and plant my feet and refuse to go on. Then I refused to go near any cafe. We were missing our coffees. Mum decided to consult a clever person so we of course went down to the Subiaco Vet to ask Greg for advice again.

Greg suggested I take some  tablets to help me relax again. Mum told me that I would feel better if I did what Greg asked. So I took my tablets every day for a whole month. I am pleased to say that they worked. I am not afraid anymore to go to the cafes anymore! Mum said, “You are an expensive dog to look after but I still love you”.

Rankin Gardens

Office workers have their lunch at this park  amongst the lovely old roses and green shady areas near the library. The Clock Tower stands on the corner. You may see me jumping like a rabbit up and over the snake vines then having little sip of water from the fish pond.

Mueller Park Dog Photos

Today my blog is about my adventures at Mueller Park in Subiaco. Mueller Park is near the Subiaco Football oval and is named after a botanist. It is very large with lots of old large trees and birds. My mate Bro and I play together there sometimes. The cars go very fast down busy Roberts Road so it is a bit dangerous for a naughty dogs who like adventure. Our parents have to watch us carefully.

Rosalie Park Dogs

Today my morning play was at Rosalie Park.

Rosalie Park is in Shenton Park on a bus route from Subiaco. It would be handy if they let me on the bus but as they don’t Mum has to drive me here.

Unfortunately Rosalie Park is a soccer and lacrosse field so us dogs are only allowed to run free in the early mornings. It is a very large space so I can run away from my mum very quickly. First I caper through the native gardens then hide under a bush. Mum never knows where I have disappeared to.

Suddenly I reappear and I race across the grass to play with other dogs.

Subiaco Station Square Dogs

Station Square

From Market Square we walk toward Subiaco through a long tree-lined park to the train station. This park does not have any grass but has a lovely fountain. It is great when I am thirsty after a long walk in summer. Lots of people stop and laugh as I try to stop the water coming out of each tap. I end up very wet and shake drops of water over whoever is near me. It is fun. One day Charlie and Benji joined me for a frolic.

Market Square

Market Square is a small park near the footy oval and has a rotunda and some arty things. It used to have a skate park but some people thought it was too noisy. On footy days it is overrun with cars so we tend to avoid it.

Lake Jualbup Park Dogs

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA LLakeJualbupDucks

Lake Jualbup is another important ABORIGINAL Site.  Its name Jualbup is clever.  It means ‘a place where water rises in the season of spring’. The lake is very pretty.

During the winter months, when the lake fills with water we see ducklings, cygnets and tortoises. If Mum and I are quiet we see egrets or maybe a night heron and lots of corellas. In 2012 there were thirteen new ducklings and four cygnets.

In the dry summer months, as the water drains away, the lake is a bit sad and smelly. The wildlife move to wetter areas. I wish they could make the water stay there.

In 2012 the City of Subiaco built a fancy new playground to keep the kids happy while their mums and dads relax.
